There are some statements I hear people say. Statements like “it is our heart that matters to God and not our body.” “It is my body, I can do what I like with it. I can put on what suit me”. But I want to ask you a simple question; does that body really belongs to you?

Let us go back to the very beginning. Genesis 2:7 says “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul.” Job testified to this when he said “Thine hands have made me……., Thou hast clothed me with skin” Job 10:8-11. Psalm 24:1 says “The earth is the Lords….” If the dust of the earth which belongs to God was used by God to create man, why should we then claim ownership of our bodies?

All things were created by Him, to Him, through Him and for Him (John 1:3, Colossians 1:16). All things here includes your body and for you to know your body also matter to God, Paul prayed that God will keep our Spirit, Soul and body blameless (1 Thessalonians 5:23) because they all be all belong to Him. The psalmist said “know that the Lord is God, it is He who has made us; we did not make ourselves” Psalm 100:3. Know that He who made you owns you. Why should you then claim ownership of your body?

A day will come that this our body which is the house of our pilgrimage (Psalm 119:54) will return to dust (Genesis 3:19). When that time comes, when the real you which is your spirit will appear before God, what account will you give before the judgement throne that you did while living in the body? (11 Corinthians 5:10, Ecclesiastics 10:9, Revelations 20:12).

You are the temple of God and anyone who destroys the temple of God, God shall destroy (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). Your body is a member of Christ (1 Corinthians 6:15), your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and you are not your own (1 Corinthians 6:19). You have been bought with a price and He who has purchased you owns you spirit, soul and body (1 Corinthians 6:20). One thing you should always do is to present that body to God as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1) because doing and obeying the desires of that body will lead to death (Romans 8:6-7).

Do not think you can use your body anyhow because it is not yours. God created you for His own glory (Isaiah 42:7) and we are to do all things to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). Before you do anything to that your body, always ask yourself, does this glorify God? Stop claiming ownership of your body because it does not belongs to you.
